St. Thomas a Becket's Church, Burton le CogglesOUR VILLAGE AND ITS CHURCH
Burton le Coggles is the most southerly parish in the North Beltisloe Group. It is a small village of 50 houses 9 miles south east of Grantham and has about 100 residents, of whom 20 are youngsters. In common with the other villages in the Group, a high proportion of the villagers are retired. Some village residents commute to London.
The Church building dates from the 13th Century and has a number of interesting archaeological features. These include the Early English tower and the spire, the Octagonal nave pillars and evidence of an ancient rood loft which was destroyed in the late 16th Century. The Church is kept locked: the Church Wardens are key holders.
In 2009 the PCC organised a very successful Stewardship programme which had the added benefit of stimulating greater fellowship within the community.CHURCH SERVICES
Church Services are co-ordinated with our nearest neighbours, Bassingthorpe and Bitchfield. Between the three villages there is normally a service each Sunday. In addition, we host at least one Group Eucharist per year. Normal Church attendance is small but loyal.THE STATE OF OUT BUILDINGS
The PCC fully accept its responsibility to maintain St. Thomas's in full working order. This entails the steady stream of maintenance activities expected in an old Church. The basic structure of the building is sound, although the roof will need serious attention over the next few years. At the current time we are planning to rewire the Church and to upgrade the heating system.
